Harnessing solar power in West Sussex

With the cost of living on the rise, many of us are looking for long-term solutions to help cut our bills and to reduce our reliance on changing energy prices. Solar panel technology allows you to move towards energy independence, taking advantage of the natural resources at your property and turning them into affordable electricity. The net result is a reduction in your electricity bill year-round, even in the winter months.

Additionally, solar panels offer homeowners a chance to protect the environment by using green, renewable energy to power their homes. West Sussex County Council has pledged to meet a net zero emissions target by 2030, and every household will need to play their part. Installing solar panels means that you can access green energy right from the source, and you’ll slash the number of units you need to buy from the grid, which may have been created using harmful fossil fuels. It’s not possible to get pure green electricity from the national grid into your home, even if you choose a green supplier.

At Otovo, we understand that solar panels are an investment. So, we want to ensure that you get the most for your money. We provide a range of solar panel options, and create a customised plan based on your property, allowing you to get maximum solar gain throughout the year. Whilst you might expect to get solar energy in the sunny summer months, you may be surprised to find that you’ll get power even on cloudy days – with October-January offering a combined output of 782kWh.

benefits of investing in solar

  • Increase your energy independence. Fluctuating energy prices can be worrying and hard to account for in your household budget. Solar panels can help reduce the impact, cutting your bills throughout the year. They can also be combined with a battery, allowing you to store the energy for when you need it most – perfect if you’re not at home during the day.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint. Solar panels harness renewable energy, meaning that they don’t rely on fossil fuels to power your home. By investing in a solar array, you can be assured you’re doing your part to fight climate change and to protect the planet we all share.
  • Make the most of your home. Placing solar panels on your roof makes the most of a previously untapped resource. Especially if you have a south-facing roof, generating solar energy means that you’re utilising the natural resources at your disposal.

How much does it cost for solar panels to be installed?

At Otovo, we work with you to create a custom solar setup that suits your property and budget. You’ll be able to explore the different types of panels available, decide how many you need, and whether or not to add a battery for storage. However, we understand that it can be helpful to have some rough estimates to work from before you contact us, so we’ve put together the numbers for West Sussex below.

Number of standard panels 5 10 15
Kilowatts peak (kWp) 2.1 kWp 4.3 kWp 5.8 kWp
Annual kWh production 2400 kWh 4700 kWh 7100 kWh
Price without battery £3,700 £4,890 £6,150
Price with battery - £6,750 £8,000

Solar panels don’t just benefit your own home. The Smart Export Guarantee allows you to get paid for any excess energy you generate by selling back to the grid. So even when you’re not at home, or if you’re not using as much power as you’re generating, your solar panels are working hard to bring you a return on your investment. With a 4 kWp setup, you can expect to save £20,000 over a 25-year period with solar panels in West Sussex – plus, you’re increasing the number of renewable energy units in the national grid mix.

Solar panel FAQs

How long does it take to install solar panels?

Since each solar panel array is unique to your home, it’s hard to give an exact guide, but typically the process takes around one to two days. A few days before your agreed installation start date, scaffolding will be erected so that our team can arrive and safely start work right away.

First, the solar panels will get attached to your roof, then once they’re secure, an electrician will connect the system to your fuse box and put your new solar array into action. The final step is for your network provider to connect your system so you can sell your excess electricity back to the grid. In order to do this you’ll need to have a smart meter installed by your electricity supplier.

What happens to my solar panels if I move house?

Whilst it’s technically possible to remove the solar panels from the roof, it’s best to leave them in place. Not only is each setup specific to the property (and so may not be suited to your next house) but solar panels can be a selling point for buyers.

You can easily transfer ownership of the panels as part of the sale – we’ll be happy to help.

Is it worth getting a battery with my solar panels?

If you want to store the energy for your own use, rather than selling it back to the grid, you’ll probably want to consider a battery. Whilst not essential, adding a battery can increase the savings you see over time – in West Sussex, we estimate that the average saving per year is £1,100 with a battery, compared to £800 without a battery (both a 4 kWp system).

A battery can also be helpful if you’re often away from home during daylight hours, as it stores your solar energy to use when you need it.
